Mauri Kantola: Maka Inglewood
This is a Week 50, 2008 short presentation about the Second Life & presentation of a small group tutor Maka Inglewood
1. The Person
Maka Inglewood is a tutor avatar who was born on October 2008. The purpose of Maka Inglewood is to help the contactors to discus and communicate how to help students and other experts in dynamic information environments of the modern knowledge society. The interaction between people using the different information systems is a challenge wich is much more complex task
2. Blog
You can read and comment about the life of tutor avatar. All kind of feed back is wellcomed, but the main purpose is to create a documented learning diary with a little bit longer time run than just direct chatting about the topics in question.
3. Facebook
Facebook site of Maka Inglewood is purpsed for direct contacts and networking. The contacted friends of Maka are mainly avatars (over 150 avatar contacts from all over the world), but also some First Life individuals have decided to include maka in their contact lists and facebook friends. 4.The official reception timo of Maka Inglewood is on Fridays Finnish time 13.oo -15.oo (Helsinki UCT+2 hours). So far Maka has discussed and changed experiences mainly with colleagues but some student avatars have also found this opportunity to have some help to the study problems. Maka is open for every kind of discussions considering the Second Life and the First Life as well.
4. Short Introduction of the Second Life
The Second Life (SL) is a software which helps people to contact each other by writing, net calling, sharing material and using some nonverbal interaction methods. You can left your self unknown in this information environment or you can advertise your real life qualities. All you need is a client which has to be downloaded to your computer from the main internet site of the SL. The very beginning of the user activity is somewhat time consuming process, but is familiar to those who have used other similar social softwares before. The nature of SL-activities can also be interpreted as a social game without synopsis or manuscript like a folksonomy compared to the taxonomy in the tagging internet activities.
5. The island of edufinland
The Edufinland is an island and a project of Finnish universities to support the use of the Seconlife to the educational and research purposes. On this island you can find the estates of some Finnish universities and other education institutions. Also the network of IT use in education (eRappu) of the universities in Turku region have a common estate on the island called e-Rappu. Maka Inglewood has a reception time on Fridays 13.00 - 15.00 (UCT+2 Helsinki time) but you can meet hime occasionally on the other times also if he has student or colleague groups visiting there.
