Adobe Connect Pro meeting 20.5.2009 with MKFC, Stockholms folkhögskolan

- eLearning Africa; community action plans - sanitation, health care; journalism and social media - starting teacher training in Ghana

- MKFC is entirely based on eLearning, and has been working for ten years on e.g. entrepreneurship projects

- entrepreneurship is embedded in all courses, also in arts courses

- students are used to presenting their skills and work to others via social media since the courses take place online and the class never meets physically

- tools to display their work and tools to earn money

- every year a larger exhibition

- MKFC offers courses to adult students but also to others; there are requirements that have to be met in order to study at MKFC: for arts students it means applying with your work and completing preliminary tasks, for other subjects it could mean that the applicant must have graduated from the secondary level

- the studies and the students are very much integrated in working life

- For our project and in terms of teaching entrepreneurship Kalle thinks that the most important thing is to help people share their ideas and to make them visible

- SL not perhaps the best forum since it requires so much extra work, installing new software.. (other net communities work better in sharing ideas)

- Also, although SL is a highly creative environment, it could be too far away from reality

- One of the main objectives should be to find the tools of social media to publish your talent / ideas and to sell them

Email from Kalle Hedlund / MKFC

Hello,

Thank you for the meeting today Niina, it was nice meet you in Adobe Connect.

Alamdar will send some information about the school later today and we will talk with our Art teacher Gola about Entrepreneur ship in her course.

Here is an community example about Art 2.0 in Ning, http://arted20.ning.com/ they have 3805 members and everyone has their gallery (photos, videos) individual pages, blogs, there are discussion forums and members can form groups etc. As an administrator you can choose what should be password protected.

Here are more information http://about.ning.com/product.php

It's free with commercials and a small fee without. We shoulden't choose a platform, this is one example and there are many others.

This kind of plattform is much more open, transparent and easier accesible than SL who requires a login, software and coordinators, knowledge about the program etc...

Kindly /Kalle

Email from Alamdar/MKFC:

Hello Niina,

It was nice sharing with you through Adobe. It gave me more understanding about the project. With reference to our discussion I discussed with one of our Arts teacher and she gave me some nice information, so I want to share it with you.

She told me that most of the students have their formal education atleast till high school level and some of them are Arts and Design teachers in different schools. During the course they learn how to present their work on social media, how to present and market their work in public places and how to present themselves as an artist. Students follow the LIA approach where they include their working life in the learning process. They use Edulink as a learning management system but they have their individual and common blogs where they can comment, give opinion and participate in discussion. Other than blogs they use Twitter, Facebook, Flicker and mySpace for sharing and collaboration.

Following are the course blog and students blogs. If you are interested to have some more information then please let me know.

I hope it would be interesting to work with you and collaborate in this project.

When Teachers Learn – Providing Local Teacher Training With Global Best Practice

How can efficient teacher education be made available to everybody, especially to those unable to attend a university nearby? According to MKFC Stockholm College, eLearning is the answer. The institution offers eLearning courses all over the world and looks back on ten years of experience in the field. Currently their system connects teachers in 142 countries without the need of expensive technology.

In a workshop at eLearning Africa the Swedish eLearning school will present their solution “End-to-End eLearning” which can be used for primary, secondary and vocational teacher training. Together with the National Africa Foundation (Ghana), they will demonstrate their unique way to combine theory and practice within teacher training. The approach of MKFC Stockholm College especially focuses on authenticity. Learners benefit from authentic activities within the online learning curriculum. Practical applications and authentic tasks are the core of the training system. In the learning process, students are a part of a net community which connects them with each other as well as to different national and international institutions worldwide giving them access to knowledge from all over the world.

Kalle Hedlund from MKFC Stockholm College explains: “Our End- to-End model is based on about ten years of experience working with eLearning for empowerment and substantial growth. We have found out that this concept works well all over the world because the learning need comes from the person and the learning happens in an authentic learning environment based on an authentic need.” The Swedish institution was able to establish a range of partnerships across Africa and beyond to support their vision “Education for all”. Therefore they work together with local entrepreneurs in Eritrea, Ghana, Kenya, Palestine, Pakistan, Somalia, Sweden, Finland and soon the Gulf area.

At the eLearning Africa workshop the team will discuss how to make teacher training successful in authentic environments via eLearning. They will also present practical experiences and the integration of the African perspective and focus on the distribution of eLearning using learning management systems and mobile phones. The workshop’s target group are principals, staff from education departments and institutions, researchers and others interested in teacher training. The workshop will take place prior to the main conference on Wednesday, May 28th, 2008. Participants need to register separately for this event.

The workshop will be led by Karl Hedlund, MKFC Stockholm College, Sweden, Olle Lundberg, MKFC Stockholm College, Sweden and Prince M. Obiri-Mainoo, National Africa Foundation, Ghana.
