Course content

Design, implementation and evaluation are the three fundamental axes that constitute the process of developing e-learning projects. Every action related to them has to be carried out adequately so that the final result matches the intended objectives and fulfils the stated criteria for quality and success. The main objective of the course is therefore the capacity building in concrete fields of action and decision taking and has a predominantly practical approach in which the learner and his active and collaborative tasks hold a fundamental role. In order to design, implement and run an e-learning project over a considerable amount of time with high indicators of quality, sustainability and acceptance, it is important to know the main factors that influence in the development and the carrying out of such a project. The course enables to identify these factors (such as context, target group, training needs and objectives, available tools and technology, pedagogical considerations, roles, human resources, financing, time, etc.) and to keep them in consideration during the entire design process. The practical character of the course allows the participants to design and to simulate the implementation of an own project. To do so, the participants will be introduced to a number of tools and techniques that support the tasks of planning and control of the project. At the same time a variety of technological tools that are likely to become necessary in the design of teaching/learning environments and resources will be identified, used and evaluated. In this aspect, there will be a stress on Web 2.0 applications, such as blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, and the open source platform MOODLE with its most important possibilities. Finally, the course introduces criteria and tools that are necessary in the evaluation of the project. Quality evaluation will be treated through the definition of fundamental quality concepts related to education, the identification of quality indicators and proposals for the implementation of quality policies based on evaluation protocols within the institutions. The course activities are based on case studies, role playing, debates and collaborative learning in asynchronous forums which, along with the achievement of the intended learning outcomes, will offer a concrete example for the application of effective pedagogical approaches in a virtual environment.
